MOUNTAIN VIEW, California (CNN) -- Students from 28 schools
in the western United States gathered Friday for the Western
Regional Robot Games, testing the speed and dexterity of
robots they constructed from a kit.
The competition is part of a NASA program to encourage
students to pursue careers in science and engineering.
Robots are the focus because they are expected to play large
roles in future space exploration.
The robots are built by each school team from a kit of
materials provided by NASA. Each team can also spend up to
$400 to customize its machines.
